F/S Prendergast was killed by cannon fire from a fighter.
A/c landed safely at base at 1730.

22 Wellingtons on cloud-cover raids to Essen, the Ruhr and the Dortmund-Ems Canal at Lingen.
13 aircraft bombed estimated positions through cloud.
One of the Wellington's came down low and machine-gunned a train near Lingen,
setting some of the carriages alight.
No aircraft were lost.

8 aircraft (2 from "A" Flight & 6 from "B" Flight)
took off on daylight operations between the hours of 12.20 and 12.45
to attack target LINGEN and ESSEN.
2 aircraft brought back their bombs owing to inter-com. and T.R. failure and lack of cloud cover.
2 aircraft jettisoned their bombs live and returned to base early owing to lack of cloud cover.
1 aircraft jettisoned its bombs between NENEHAM and LINGEN when attacked by enemy aircraft.
This aircraft was badly shot up but returned safely to base,
the Wireless Operator was mortally wounded.
1 aircraft (A/C. S.Z.1574 - Captain Sgt. PURSEY) bombed ESSEN from a height of 2,500 feet
by T.R. fix and D.R.,
but no results were seen although bursts were heard.
2 aircraft (A/C. V.B.J. - Captain F/S. CRIMMIN) (A/C. N.B.J.990 - Captain Sgt. BALDWIN)
bombed LINGEN from a height of 400 feet, scoring hits on an engine shed and railway station
and machine gunning two passenger trains.
Corner of engine shed appeared to collapse.
All the aircraft had returned safely to base after operations by 02.55 hours.
