Believed shot down by a intruder.
Crashed at 0212 while attempting a landing at Martlesham Heath airfield.

9 aircraft (took off between 2013 and 2022 hours)
(5 from "A" Flight and 4 from "B" Flight) were detailed to attack Target Town MANNHEIM.
6 of the above successfully located and attacked target and bombing from between 9000 and 17500 feet,
bombs were dropped on target area, but ne results were observed owing to cloud.
A/C. V.Z.8848 (Captain S/L. KNIGHT) turned back from primary target due to severe icing and electrical storms
and attacked a wharf on the HOOK OF HOLLAND from a height of 4000 feet, bursts were seen but no results were observed.
One can of incendiaries hung up and were brought back.
A/C. W.Z.8802 (Captain P/O. DUFF) abandoned sortie owing to complete W/T. failure.
A/C. B.R.1798 (Captain Sgt. KEATING) also abandoned sortie due to severe icing and electrical storms.
A/C. D.X.9826 (Captain Sgt. MURDOCH) was observed over MARTLESHAM being followed by E/A and was then seen crash.

0345. All aircraft had returned safely to Base after operations with the exception of A/C. D.X.9826 (Captain MURDOCH).
