T/O Marham 2308. Target Manheim, Germany.
Hit a line of trees and crashed 0515 alongside the Saxthorpe-Heydon road near Corpusty, 15 miles NNW of Norwich.
All crew seriously injured.

ORB. 22/8/1940. Industrial Targets.
Eleven aircraft (took off between 23.01 hours and 00.35 hours) from each Squadron at MARHAM
were detailed for operations at first but this was later altered to eight from each.
MILDENHALL also sent A/C.
The targets were Oil works at BOTTROP and marshalling yards at MANNHEIM, SOEST, and HAMM.
The start was late in view of the late late moon.

One of the main targets, Oil stores at BOTTROP, was hidden by cloud, only one aircraft found it, and bombed; explosions seen later.
MANNHEIM marshalling yard was successfully attacked.
DUISBERG Electric power, De MOK sea-plane base, SOEST, HAMM and COBLENZ marshalling yards were also attacked.

Casualties.
0600. Sergeant COOK, in attempting to force land due to lack of petrol crashed at WOOD DALLING.
Sgt. WATTS, front gunner, died later.
Sgt. COOK and SGT. EDWARDS, the pilots, suffered broken thighs and
P/O. WATER, the rear gunner, a broken ankle and head injuries.
Sgt. OVERALL and Sgt. NATHAN had only slight injuries.

0620. The remainder had returned after fairly successful attack in spite of cloud.
