Crew on 4th operation with experienced captain.
Caught in searchlight cone over Tonning.
Hit by flak then attacked by a night fighter, Lt Eckart-Wilhelm von Bonin II./NJG I.
This was von Bonin's first night victory.
ORB. 11/5/1941. 8 aircraft (took off between 22.26 hours to 22.42 hours) took part in Operations,
and 6 aircraft successfully located and attacked targets.
In the attack on HAMBURG one stick of bombs were seen to burst in target area, causing many fires, including a large red one.
Other fires were observed burning on arrival and increasing as A/C. left. One fire was in main oil storage works.
A/C. Z.R.1517. (Captain P/O. BAILEY) had to abandon sortie owing to interior failure and inability to maintain height.
(Was attacked by M.E.110 on the return but no damage was sustained by either aircraft.)
A/C. W.R.1502. (Captain P/O. FOSTER) mistook River WESSEL for River ELBE and attacked
ALLES Works at BREMEN, causing a large fire.
(Many other fires were observed at HOLZHAFER near town aiming point. One WHITLEY and
one WELLINGTON seen bombing BREMEN.)
A/C. A.T.2063. (Captain F/O. KIRK) was unable to continue his sortie on KIEL due to failure of Front Gunners oxygen valve.
All aircraft had returned to ENGLISH Bases by 0555. hours.
