Wellington R1063 6/7 July 1941

Wellington Mk IC - R1063 - KO-D

T/O Marham 2326. Target: Munster, Germany.
Shot down by night fighter Oblt Helmut Woltersdorf, IV./NJG1.
Radio message received, "Am landing in the sea".
Crashed in the North Sea at 0217 on a sand bank near Schiermonnikoog, Netherlands.
All three night fighter crew injured but rescued by a German ASR.

ORB. 6th July. 9 A/C. took off between 0001 hours and 0030 hours.
All aircraft successfully located and attacked the target area, and bombing from heights ranging
from 12.500 feet to 14.000 feet, and bombs were dropped in target area,
causing a large no. of fires, and adding to those already burning.
One stick of bombs (A/C. Q.R.1468 - Captain P/O. DUFF) were observed to fall among railway buildings and junction causing large fires.
A/C. F.X.9671 (Captain Sgt. WALLACE) was attacked by an enemy aircraft (J.U.88), but was driven off after 8 minutes combat,
the only damage being a row holes in the aircraft.
A/C. U.X.9672 (Captain Sgt. BERNEY) (Wellington MK IC X9672 KO-U) was attacked by an enemy fighter and the
Rear Gunner Sgt. KERRUISH was killed,
and the bombs were jettisoned in the sea, and aircraft returned to base.
A/C D.R.1063 (Captain Sgt. MATTHEWS) failed to return to base after operations,
but a message was received stating that the aircraft was landing in the sea.
All attempts at rescue by aircraft and surface vessels was of no aveil.

(A/C. Y.W.5449 - Captain P/O. FOSTER - this operations was cancelled and aircraft did not take off.)

0459. All other aircraft had returned safely to base after operations.
