Lancaster Mk III - LM738 A4-B

T/O Witchford 0735 - target Calais, France, to bomb strong points.
Crashed with great force in the target area.
Those who perished are buried in various French cemeteries.
The following day the enemy surrendered leaving only the Channel Islands and
a garrison at Royan outside of Allied hands.

13 aircraft (5 from "A" Flt., 4 from "B" Flt., and 4 from "C" Flight)
were detailed to attack CALAIS and took of between 0725 and 0750 hours.
One aircraft (captain F/O. L. WIBBERLEY) failed to return from operations -
no news having been received.
The remaining aircraft identified the target and bombed from heights ranging
between 5000 feet and 6500 feet.
Very concentrated bombing Photographs were attempted.
Slight heavy Flak from CALAIS.

1025. 12 aircraft had returned safely to base after operations.
