504 aircraft - 282 Lancasters, 188 Halifaxes, 26 Wellingtons, 8 Mosquitos.
This was the last Bomber Command raid in which Wellingtons took part.
300 (Polish) and 432 (Canadian) Squadrons provided
the 26 Wellingtons
which operated on this night; they all returned safely.
The German controller guessed correctly that Hannover was the target and many
night fighters arrived before the attack was over.
Conditions over Hannover were clear and the Pathfinders were finally able to
mark the centre of the city accurately; a most concentrated attack followed
with a creepback of only 2 miles, all within the built-up area.
This was probably Hannover's worst attack of the war.
27 aircraft - 14 Lancasters and 13 Halifaxes - were lost, 5.4 per cent of the force.

ORB. 8th Oct., 1943.
12 aircraft took off between 23.30 hours and 23.50 hours to attack HANOVER.
2 aircraft were forced to abandon the sortie,
1 **(L.D.S.680 - Captain P/O. H. G. HICKS) due to petrol in oxygen supply to rear turret
and the other
*(Z.D.S.661 - Captain P/O. K. HARRIS) due to W/T. receiver being unserviceable,
and both returned to Base early,
1 *after jettisoning all its bombs safe and the other
**jettisoning its 8,000 lbs. H.C. safe (but exploded) but bringing back its incendiaries.
1 aircraft failed to return from operations.
The remainder identified the target by means of red and green target indicator markers
and bombed the red markers from heights ranging from 17,000 feet and 21,800 feet.
Attack appeared to be a successful one; fairly extensive fires were seen;
a large explosion was seen at 01.40 hours and an oil fire at 01.42 hours.
Photographs were attempted.
04.10. 11 aircraft had returned safely to Base.
