518 aircraft - 274 Lancasters, 151 Halifaxes, 81 Wellingtons, 12 Mosquitos dispatched to Essen.

The weather was cloudy and skymarking had to be used. The main bombing was scattered, with many aircraft undershooting.
The limited damage caused in Essen was mainly in the central and northern districts. Bombs fell in 10 surrounding Ruhr towns.

23 aircraft - 11 Halifaxes, 6 Lancasters, 5 Wellingtons, 1 Mosquito - lost, 4.4 per cent of the force.

ORB. 27th May, 1943.
16 aircraft took off between 23.09 hours & 23.25 hours to attack target ESSEN.
15 aircraft located the target by means of tracking flares and release point flares on which they
dropped their bombs from heights ranging between 15,000 feet and 20,000 feet.
Two large explosions, one reddish with reddish smoke rising to 4,000 feet (N.D.S.647 - Captain P/O. D. F. BROWN) ,
and concentrated fires were observed. Leaflets were dropped & photographs attempted.
One aircraft (S.D.S.653 - Captain P/O. D. W. RHYS) sustained slight damage to mid upper perspex
through heavy Flak over target area.
One aircraft failed to return from Operations.

03.50. 15 aircraft had returned safely to Base after Operations.
