COUSENS) bombing from a height of 11,500 feet dropped bombs on centre of town on first run in and bombed factory on second run. This aircraft was attacked over target by enemy biplane which broke off engagement when fired on. No damage was sustained by aircraft which on return was diverted to BOSCOMBE DOWN. A/C. G.X.3597. (Captain S/L. CHILTON) bombing from a height of 9,500 feet dropped his bombs which were seen to burst on target, 15 fires being observed in area of town. 9 aircraft took off on operations to attack target TURIN between 18.05 hours and 18.40 hours. 2 aircraft were forced to abandon the sortie and returned to base early, one owing to inability to climb and overheating engines (bombs brougt back) and the other owing to port airscrew trouble (bombs jettisoned save). The other 7 aicraft successfully located the target and bombed from heights ranging between 7,000 feet and 12,000 feet. Many bursts were seen in target area, several of them being on or near the FIAT WORKS. Bursts were also seen just North of the marshalling yards. Many fires were observed burning all over the target area. Photographs were attempted. |

(Captain Sgt. THURSTON) bombing from a height of 10,500 feet dropped bombs which were seen to explode North of marshalling yards. Scattered fires particularly in neighbourhood of FIAT WORKS were observed. A/C. G.X.3597. (Captain P/O. FARQUHARSON) bombing from a height of 12,000 feet dropped his bombs without observing any results owing to glare from existings fires. On return aircraft landed at TANGMERE. A/C. B.X.3924. (Captain Sgt. RODGERS) visually identified target and bombing from a height of 10,000 feet dropped his bombs which were seen to burst on target. Two large fires, one with dark red glow and red smoke and also numerous smaller fires were observed in centre of town, like new attack starting up. Incendiaries were seen to ignite in the vicinity of the marshalling yards and very good fires were burning in the whole of STUTTGART. Leaflets were dropped and photographs attempted. |
