Bomb load A/C. L.X.9733. (Captain P/O. TRENCH) attacking ROTTERDAM and bombing from a height of 11.000 feet dropped his bombs on dock area and observed a long line of fires on West bank with explosions coming out of fires. A/C. A.X.9751. (Captain F/S. EDWARDS) Attacking ROTTERDAM and bombing from a height of 13.500 feet dropped his bombs and incendiaries across dock and observed bursts. On arrival a huge red fire and smoke in town North side of river were observed. A/C. G.Z.8863. (Captain Sgt. THOMPSON) attacking ROTTERDAM and bombing from a height of 12.000 feet dropped his bombs 235 degrees between docks 29 and 31. Dozens of white and greeny white explosions like big bomb flashes followed, fires were visible 25 miles away A/C. J.X.9875. (Captain Sgt. LESLIE) attacking ROTTERDAM and bombing from a height of 13.000 feet observed his bombs burst across docks. Incendiaries caused two large red fires which were visible after crossing coast on return. On arrival two large red fires were observed East of docks. A/C. F.X.9909. (Captain Sgt. MORTON) attacking target ROTTERDAM was forced to abandon the sortie at 2020. hours due to the starboard engine becoming overheated and the aircraft being unable to climb or maintain height. Bombs were jettisoned alive about 10 miles from DUTCH Coast. The Navigator was taken ill and no log was kept after 2023. hours. A/C. V.X.8848. (Captain S/L. COLEMAN) attacking target ROTTERDAM and bombing from a height of 13.500 feet dropped his bombs and much smoke was seen but no fires were observed. Good fires were observed burning on docks No.21 and 22 on arrival. A/C. T.X.9888. (Captain Sgt. DUTTON) attacking target ROTTERDAM and bombing from a height of 12.000 feet dropped his bombs on West side of Dock 20. 5-6 small fires were seen to follow. Fires were also observed at Dock No.15 and North of Dock No.18. A/C. Q.X.9877. (Captain Sgt. RUNAGALL) attacking target ROTTERDAM and bombing from a height of 13.500 feet dropped his bombs South to North across Docks No.15, 16, and 17. Bursts were observed. A/C. P.X.9873. (Captain W/O. SNOWDEN) attacking target ROTTERDAM and bombing from a height of 10.000 feet dropped his bombs in a glide East to West across PETROLEUM HAVEN, St. JANS HAVEN and St. MAASHAVEN. 5 fires were started which later merged into one large fire parallel and 1/2 mile North of above fire was seen. A/C. R.X.9871. (Captain Sgt. BROWNE) attacking target DUNKIRK and bombing from a height of 11.000 feet dropped his bombs between Dock No.4 and canal, bursts were observed. A/C. W.X.9616. (Captain P/O. WILEY) attacking target DUNKIRK and bombing from a height of 15.000 feet dropped his bombs North East to South West across Docks between 2 existing fires one outside Dock No.2 and the other outside Dock No.2. Bursts only were seen. A/C. S.Z.8844. (Captain Sgt. GEORGE) attacking target DUNKIRK and bombing from a height of 12.000 feet dropped his bombs North West to South East into ? on across Docks No.5,4,3 and 2. 3 bursts were seen. All aircraft had returned safely to Base at 2309. hours. |

Bursts were observed and several fires in open country. A/C. W.X.9616. (Captain P/O. WILEY) bombing from 12.000 feet dropped his bombs North West to South East over target area in good visibility. Bursts were observed and also 3 large fires. A/C. A.X.9751. (Captain F/S. EDWARDS) bombing from 10.000 feet saw bombs and incendiaries burst and no other results. A red fire was visible 30 miles away on leaving. Hydraulics and fuselage were shot up and 2nd. Pilot hit in foot by Flak. I.F.E. would not work. A/C. F.X.9909. (Captain Sgt. MORTON) was caught in a S/L. belt and had to dive to escape and turn to sea to regain height. Attacked by M.E.110, possibly hit. Tremendous aerial activity. Target not reached. A/C. J.X.9831. (Captain Sgt. George) bombing from 8.500 feet ran up marshalling yards and dropped his bombs. Many bomb flashes were seen and 2 large and several small fires, large fires seen 80 miles away. A/C. K.X.9831. (Captain Sgt. BROWN) bombing from a height of 13.000 feet after pinpointing railway junction South South East of town and bursts were seen to straddle in good visibility. Radio was giving trouble and runaway front gun. A/C. P.X.9873. (Captain W/O. SNOWDEN, bombing from a height of 10.500 feet dropped his bombs and observed bursts and fires. The whole town was ablaze on arrival and visible 60 miles away. Many explosions were caused by incendiaries of other aircraft, and great billows of smoke rising to 8.000 feet possibly an attempted smoke screen. A/C. Q.X.9877. (Captain Sgt. RUNAGALL) observed town ablaze on arrival and bombing from a height of 11.500 feet observed his bombs add to existing fires. Collided on flare-path on return. A/C. T.X.9888. (Captain Sgt. DUTTON) bombing from a height of 12.000 feet dropped his bombs East to West on target with large fires. Rear turret hit by E/A. A/C. G.Z.8863. (Captain Sgt. A/C. D.Z.9871. F/O. PATERSON and crew.
Bomb load A/C. S.Z.8844. (Captain F/O. SWORD) turned from primary target due to engine trouble and attacked DE KOVY AERODROME and bombing from a height of 6.000 feet dropped his bombs and observed two intense fires started similar to burning aircraft with small explosions at intervals. Fires were also observed on both sides of flare path and near hangers on South East side of aerodrome. A/C. D.Z.9871. (Captain F/O. PATERSON) was unable to locate primary target and attacked last resort target DE KOVY AERODROME and bombing from a height of 8.500 feet dropped his bombs and observed bursts slightly West of drome too far out to catch dispersed aircraft. A/C. L.X.9733. (Captain P/O. WILEY) was unable to locate primary target so bombed BORKUM and bombing from a height of 16.000 feet saw his bombs start fires on island near Flak and searchlights. A/C. A.Z.1084. (Captain F/S. EDWARDS) bombing from a height of 15.000 feet dropped his incendiaries on E.T.A. and his bombs on concentration of Flak at GUNINGEN. No results were observed. A/C. V.Z.8848. (Captain Sgt. SOAMES) reached target area on E.T.A. and bombing from a height of 13.000 feet dropped his bombs on EMDEN area West to East through cloud. Three flashes only were seen. A/C. G.Z.8863. (Captain P/O. SMITH) bombing from a height of 14.000 feet dropped his bombs and observed a large circular fire started in probably old town. A.S.I. went unserviceable at TEXEL. A/C. J.X.9875. (Captain Sgt. LESLIE) could not locate primary target and bombing from a height of 14.000 feet dropped his bombs three miles North West of DE KOVY AERODROME. No bursts were observed but incendiaries started a yellow fire. A/C. H.Z.8853. (Captain Sgt. GEORGE) could not locate primary target and bombing from a height of 14.000 feet dropped his bombs on EMDEN area. Bursts of incendiaries and bombs were seen three miles to the East. A/C. K.X.9831. (Captain S/L. FOSTER) bombing from a height of 13.000 feet dropped his bombs and observed bursts of bombs and incendiaries near river bank East of old town walls. No other results observed. A/C. P.X.9873. (Captain W/O. SNOWDEN) failed to return from operations. A/C. X.L.7854. (Captain Sgt. RUNAGALL) was unable to locate primary target owing to cloud and bombing from a height of 18.000 feet dropped his bombs on ZUIDERLAND AERODROME. Incendiaries and bombs were observed to burst on aerodrome. A/C. T.X.9888. (Captain Sgt. DUTTON) was unable to attack primary target due to cloud and bombing from a height of 12.000. feet attacked TEXEL. Bombs and incendiaries were seen to bursts but no other results observed. A/C. W.X.9616. (Captain Sgt. DAVIE) bombing from a height of 13.500 feet dropped his bombs and observed bursts among small fires already burning. A/C. Z.Z.8839. (Captain S/L. COLEMAN) had to abandon sortie owing to failure starboard engine. Bomb (4.000 lb.) was jettisoned safely. All the above aircraft with exception of P.X.9873. (Captain W/O. SNOWDEN) had returned safely to Base by 2343. hours. |
